In a move to increase tourist traffic to the northern parts of Kerala, the Malabar Tourism Development Cooperative Ltd. (MTDCL) has set up a dedicated travel and tours division – Vismaya Tours & Travels. It is the second venture by the cooperative society which also operates a water theme park, ‘Vismaya Park’, in Kannur district of Kerala. The company will offer both inbound and outbound packages and carry out promotions through its website and the travel trade. AP Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Kerala, inaugurated the division on December 31, 2011.
The objective is to promote the Malabar region of Kerala, the company will also come up with inbound and outbound packages and promote the same through both the company’s website and the travel trade. “The company will also participate in all the future travel exhibitions in both India and abroad to promote its packages,” he added. When asked about setting up offices in other regions in the country, he said that it is too early and the branching out will depend on the response and growth in the future.
In an additional measure to increase tourist arrivals to North Kerala, Kerala Tourism will create a tourism circuit connecting various destinations of tourist interest in the northern districts comprising Kasaragode, Wayanad, and Kannur. “The objective is to promote the untapped tourism potential of the northern districts,” Anilkumar said. The Minister said that 80 per cent of inbound tourism into the state is confined to the Southern part of the State because of lack of awareness and proper marketing. He assured assistance to the promotion of tourism in the northern part of the state.
